In the heart of the Beskids, at St. Jacob's Square, you will find a unique attraction in Szczyrk – a monument commemorating the courage of mountain rescuers from GOPR and the establishment of organized rescue in 1952. The monument, unveiled in October 2018, is a symbol of the wonderful traditions of mountain rescue in Poland.
The monument was unveiled by two elders of GOPR – Jerzy Podgórny and Alojzy Szupina, who played a key role in the development of mountain rescue. Composed of two monumental sandstone boulders, symbolically leaning against each other, it serves not only as a place of memory but also as an inspiration for future generations of rescuers. On one of the boulders, there are bronze old-style skis and a rope, and on the other – the coat of arms of Szczyrk, a sprig of mountain pine, and the inscription: “In tribute to the founders of mountain rescue in the Beskids.”
By visiting this monument, you will have the opportunity to pay tribute to the heroes who risked their lives to save others. It is a perfect example of local heritage and dedication to the safety of mountain lovers, with a history that dates back more than half a century. Thanks to the work of GOPR rescuers, many people returned safely from difficult mountain expeditions.
If you are planning a stay in Szczyrk, the monument in tribute to the founders of mountain rescue is undoubtedly one of the attractions worth including in your sightseeing plan. It is also a symbol of unity, solidarity, and support in difficult times.
